About Us

In 1972 Joel Ruiz purchased the land and began clearing it and planning the layout of the park.  The park was originally named “Rancho Hawaii Campground” but was renamed the San Ygnacio RV Park in 1979.  One of the first improvements made to the park in the 1970’s was to relocate the entrance.  Its original entrance was facing the town via a back road, but Joel made the improvement of getting the entrance built facing the highway.  Shortly after, development and access to the boat ramp was made, followed by the front office building being developed, the recreational hall was built, and a laundromat was installed. Throughout the years several upgrades have been made, but the most prominent one has been the addition of Satellite Meter Loops to eliminate the need for monthly meter readings of tenants.

In September 2022, Joel designated his youngest daughter, Marianne “Mare” Rivera, to assist managing the park operations and daily duties.  Marianne resides out of state, and with her background in engineering and supply chain, she’s begun to streamline operations to be sustainable and manage the park remotely by applying as much automation as possible.  Since this transition, the following improvements and major maintenance items have been done:

  • Overhaul of park maintenance (lawn + trees + roads + junk removal + new tool shed installed)
  • Security lights and Electric Car Charger installed
  • Buildings repainted and window trims redone
  • Office building and Laundry room electrical redone
  • Wi-Fi with security cameras throughout the park
  • Website development
  • New signs and banners for the park
  • Automated water meters via Wi-Fi
  • Rental payment system online

History

Historic Town

Enjoy the historic town of San Ygnacio, Texas. It is Zapata County’s oldest town on the Rio Grande and U.S. Highway 83. It was settled in 1830 by former residents of Revilla (now Nuevo Guerrero, Tamaulipas, Mexico) under the leadership of Jesus Trevino. In 1830, Trevino built a sandstone home, known today as Fort Trevino. A sundial was placed at the home in 1851; the timepiece has become a tourist attraction. This town was also featured in the 1951 film Viva Zapata.

Hobbies

Bird Watching

Our town has a very rare bird, called the White-Collared Seedeater (also known as the Morelet’s Seedeater)! Since 1946, this species population has precipitously declined with recent breeding records only found in Zapata County. It ranges from San Ygnacio, TX to Eastern Mexico and Central America to Panama.
